Yes Fiction Writers, You Have To Research Too

While Abandon is all about setting the character relationships, attitudes, and history, Savior is all about fighting zombies.  (Seriously, I’m only 20K in and I’ve already got three fights – this book is going to be action packed.)  One of the things that I’ve been having a little bit of trouble with is the whole, getting the weapons right thing.  You know, what kind of guns do they have?  In Abandon I just made a mention that they had weaponry  [Click Comments To Continue]

Abandon and Savior (Or How I Started Writing Again)

savior_cover-187x300

My entire life I’ve been a writer, and last year that all culminated in me publishing Abandon.   Unfortunately, after writing Abandon I found myself burnt out on writing, on the story, and everything to do with my blog – which is why I took such a large hiatus.  During this time, I found myself beginning to hate the story and I often spent time opening the document to look at it, and thinking how much it sucked. (In fact, as many of my friends [Click Comments To Continue]

I’m Like Jay-Z With My Fake Retirements

“It’s the oldest story in the book. One day you’re 17 and planning for someday, and then quietly and without you really noticing, someday is today. And then, someday is yesterday. And this is your life.” I started blogging when I was in my teens, but it didn’t really get popular until I was 17 or so.  Since then I have journeyed to college, graduated from college, moved to Madison, Wisconsin, moved back to DC.  I’ve excelled professionally, [Click Comments To Continue]

Announcing My Retirement From Writing

RetirementLane

When every relationship ends, there’s always something that you can’t do.  It might be listen to a song that was your song, or eat a certain kind of food.  Maybe there’s a store that was your store.  There’s always something that leaves your life. One of the reasons I have never shared my writing in a personal way with those that I date (despite some of them being amazing writers in their own right) was that I never wanted my writing to leave [Click Comments To Continue]

Hiring an Editor for Your Work #IndieAuthor

Last night I went out with Katina and her bridal party to dinner at Friday’s.  It was interesting because aside from work related things, I don’t really hang out with anyone anymore.  (Well, and things with Kellie and Thomas.)  It was fun times, and it was nice to get out of the house and be with other people.  It wasn’t nice enough to keep me out though, and I ended up going home and having my first meeting with my editor for Abandon. It actually [Click Comments To Continue]

The First Bad Review

bad_review

One of the questions that people most often ask me is how I handle bad reviews.  I guess they think when you’re a blogger you get a lot of them.  It’s always been an interesting question to me because up until today I hadn’t gotten a review on Abandon that was bad. Well, now I know how to answer the question. You know what I did?  I made my bed.  Really, I got up off my laptop, walked to my laundry room, took the sheets out of the dryer [Click Comments To Continue]

Author Interview with Kate Campbell

kate_campbell

In this great journey of self-publishing my own novel, I’ve had the opportunity to talk with many other self published authors.  One of them is the amazing Kate Campbell, who has a way with words that I wish I could bottle up and steal for myself.  Kate and I also have a very similar history, starting in journalism and moving to self publishing your own novel, so I’m very excited that I was able to score an interview with Kate regarding her writing [Click Comments To Continue]

Why I Am Failing at #NaNoWriMo

nawrimo

Today is supposed to be the 16K mark for #NaNoWriMo if you’re on target.  I’m sitting at 4K – and honestly half of that is outline that is going to go away when I actually start writing.  Considering that I pumped out Abandon in a little under a month, I’m frustrated by the lack of my writing as of late.  I have the outline there, I have the story, I just need to flesh it out – should be easy.  Instead, I sit here staring at at my computer for [Click Comments To Continue]

… and also #NaBloPoMo too? Obviously I’m a sadist.

NaBloPoMo_Hero

November is here!  November is here!  So, not only am I doing NaNoWriMo this month, but I’m also doing #NaBloPoMo, which is short for National Blog Posting Month and is set up by BlogHer.  Unfortunately, the people in charge of BlogHer are obviously either sadists who want all of us to be “written-out” by December 1st, or they thought it would be hilarious to watch all of us trying to write quality novels and quality blog posts for a month.
