My Pinky Hurts

sad-face

So, if you’ve been following me on twitter you know that I’m writing a novel which I’m aiming to self-publish via ebook sometime in October.  It’s an arduous process that involves a lot of typing.  First, I have to write out the 50,000 or so words of the story, and second, I have to go back and constantly read and edit parts that I’ve already written.

I’m using google docs to complete it so that I can take it anywhere I go thanks to T-Mobile and the fact that they turn my phone into a mobile hot spot.  So far, I’ve written it at my desk at home, my desk at my office, and my laptop, in various locales.  (Including my car as I waited for a friend to be ready.)

One thing I have noticed as I continue to write and rewrite is the pinky on my right had has be hurting lately.  It’s a dull ache that never seems to go away when I finish typing.  I kept wondering why this was until one day I looked down at my hands as I typed (which I never do) and noticed the position of that poor pinky.

It’s a little nazi pinky finger!

I have no idea why my pinky does that but I’m pretty sure that Mavis Beacon (if she was still around) would be disappointed in me.

What strange typing habits do you have?

Careful, Thats how my recently diagnosed Carpul Tunnell began. With a pinky ache!

What! No! My mom has carpul tunnell too. That would be horrible. I’m too young for that.

    Conversation from this morning, actually:
Joe: question: does anyone even use the left-hand shift key?
    Ashley: I do.
Joe: ok – i figured if any of my friends did, it would be you.
I also use home row, which is apparently something that people don’t actually do in real life. I guess it’s not cool or whatever.

I just looked at my fingers as I was typing this and I totally do use the left hand shift key. In fact, it just rests on there waiting for me to need to shift.

It’s the right handed one that I never use. Ugh!

Also, I use the home rows too.

My right pinky rests on the semi-colon. My fingers rarely stray from home row.
Get the softflex gloves though — they don’t look like much but they are magic. I’m wearing mine today because I hurt my wrist a couple of days ago. They are not indicated for wrist injury but they help anyway. I also got them because my pinky was numb though. (I think. It’s been a couple of years… it hasn’t happened since I got them, so I don’t totally remember!)
